Teeth Whitening: Foods and Drinks That Can Stain Your Teeth

October 9, 20180

Tooth discolouration is often the result of the foods and drinks you consume on a regular basis. By being a little more mindful of what you eat and drink, you can help protect your pearly whites. At Bayside Dental & Orthodontics, we provide teeth whitening in Airdrie. Many of our patients visit our clinic because of tooth stains due to the following foods and drinks:

Sugary Sweets

Sugar is the main food source for the plaque bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease. Plaque bacteria can also leave yellowish stains on your teeth. If you like to indulge in candies and sweets that make your tongue change colour, then try to limit how many you have and how often you eat them.

Berries

Berries are a healthy and nutritious snack full of antioxidants. Unfortunately, darker berries such as blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries can darken your teeth. If you love eating berries, then try rinsing your mouth with some water or drinking some milk afterwards. You can also make smoothies out of them and drink through a straw to avoid the staining effects.

Citrus Fruits

Though citrus fruits are also good for you and tend not to be very dark in colour, the problem is that they are acidic. Acids can wear away at your tooth’s protective layer of enamel, exposing the yellower dentin underneath. Thinner dentin also leaves you more susceptible to developing cavities. You don’t have to stop consuming citrus fruits, but try to eat other, less acidic fruits as well.

Dark Sauces

Sauces can enhance the flavour of a dish, but the problem is that they tend to be dark in colour and cling to the teeth long after you’re finished eating. You’ll particularly want to watch out for tomato sauce, soy sauce, and curry sauces. A good rule of thumb is if the sauce you are eating can stain a white tablecloth, then it can likely discolour your white tooth enamel as well.

Beverages Other than Water

Water is the best choice of beverage for keeping your teeth healthy and white. Numerous drinks, because of their dark colour, their acidity, or both, can strain your teeth and erode away the tooth enamel. This includes coffee, tea, wine, sugary soda, carbonated soda, and sports drinks. All types of tea, even white and green tea, contain chemicals known as tannins that can leave grey or yellowish stains. White wine, though it may be light in colour, actually tends to be more acidic than red white and can leave stains as well.

Eliminate Tooth Stains with Teeth Whitening in Airdrie

While you don’t necessarily have to cut the foods and drinks above completely out of your diet, limiting your consumption of them can prevent tooth stains and even help to whiten your smile. If you’re looking for faster and more noticeable results, then you can also schedule a teeth whitening in Airdrie at Bayside Dental & Orthodontics. We offer in-office teeth whitening treatment and home-based bleaching solutions.
